Leaf  I Am Healthy Radio

I recently participated in an exciting panel discussion program which included some of the leaders in the wellness and healing world including : Cherie Soria, Christina Pirello, Diana Store, Dr. Brian Clement, David Rainoshek, Dr. David Wong, Dr. Doug Graham, Elyse Nuff, Irisha Pomerantzeff, Jill Swyers, Jim Carey, Justin Schmidt, Karen Knowler, Katrina Rainoshek, Mark (Dr. Tea) Ukra, Mark Perlmutter, Michael Saiber, Mike Anderson, Niedra Gabriel, Nomi Shannon, Rhio, Ricardo Riskalla, Roman Devivo, Selina Delangre, Shauna Verkade, Tamera Campbell, and Victoria Boutenko.

The event was recorded and will be broadcast internationally this Sunday, December 2, to usher in the Holiday celebration for conscious nutrition and for our health in general. Mike Adams of NewsTarget.com will be a special guest.

The topics that will be covered in this program range from nutrition for healing and optimal health to herbal remedies, addressing emotions and eating, raw vegan or not.  As well as the use of salt, issues and complications with dehydration, a wellness approach to cancer and diabetes and many other pertinent issues that we face as we search for incredible health.

This event (which is actually a combination of three panel discussions) will be available as a one-time only marathon broadcast of a new show called "Recipes For Life" with Dorit - founder of the Raw Film Festival - and I would appreciate if you joined in to listen to these incredible panelists.

Leaf  What Raw Living Foods Do for Helen Terry

Dear Jim,

I've needed to write you this for a long time - NOW is the time to say it.

Your wonderful website has helped me transition from SAD to RAW these at least two years. You have indeed provided the education to empower me to choose this way of, at least, eating to rebuild a body damaged by menu choices of a lifetime. I have been macrobiotic and vegan for at least thirty years, yet only periodically has dramatic weight loss been achieved again (classic yo-yo dieter), specifically through severely restricted calories and strenuous exercise. These last four and a half years have seen a sharp increase in my weight, even though being vegan, and it is only since embarking on RAW 100% for, as of this writing, 26 days, and I have 'released' 7 pounds in the last eight days.

What is most dramatic, though is what I will say next. As of now, two things:

One: All of my new hair is coming in in its natural color, medium brown.  Many grey hairs are falling out. That's pretty dramatic.

But, Two is that, and to me, even more shocking, is that my teeth are changing from translucent (which they became, almost like stalagmites) two years ago, now to SOLID in color or makeup. It's hard to explain, but about the time I actively adopted raw on at least a 50% daily basis, here I'm supposing the alkaline drop in my bones and teeth could be seen in that my teeth started to become translucent. Today, this week, I noticed that they are, from the root down almost two-thirds, solid in color. This can only be attributed to an alkaline input of fuel daily. Victoria Boutenko's Green Smoothie concept I give credit to almost entirely, as those would most days be my only Raw input, later for dinner being vegan cooked. But the changes were happening on the inside, invisible to me until now.  IT'S ACCUMULATIVE!

No magic bullet, but soft, swift changes internally. It's all about the bioterrain, which you've been talking about all this time (and Victoria stressed constantly in her book, Green for Life - Thank you, Victoria!).

In closing, thanks for providing for me the home study program, for your witness of befores and afters in this 'lifestyle' and especially your daily dedication to all of us struggling along this narrow path to progress, not perfection (but closely approaching it!!!). Thank you so much for all you do.

Helen Terry
Texas

Hey, very nice letter, Helen. Thanks for sharing

Victoria Boutenko tells of Sergei and Valya's fillings falling out, and their carries (cavities) healing. Of course, they were young at the time, but.... what a magnificent self-healing machine our bodies are, aren't they?

Leaf  Hanging with Raw Friends

[- A good article I found while websufing - Jim]

EXCITING TIMES - I hang out with friends
September 27, 2007

I went to Lesa's Full Moon Ladies’ Night Out tonight. We all ended up chatting about the raw food meeting on Monday night, and then we wound up talking about rules and gurus who put out rules and then turn out to not be following them, themselves, i.e., gurus who are not 100% raw, and then gurus who say that their way is the only way.

Until this year, I had never associated in person with raw foodies, and my experienced in “organized” raw foodism has been unusual, to say the least. I have been lucky to meet some very nice people on the mailing list I have been involved in for the past two years, and one, Lesa, is right here in NYC, so now I have a raw food friend in-person. I've been happily trundling along, doing what seemed right (I think they now call that intuitive eating), and suddenly, I have encountered all sorts of ways that are the one and only right way to be raw. Some people say food should be eaten in its original state, not processed at all - ah, but that is an old one - when I was starting out, the only people who hewed to that one were men who, it seemed to me, were too lazy to fix their food.

My first raw food information came from the Fathmans' book - they were making up things as they went along - there had been no personable discussions of raw food published, and, to my knowledge, no recipe books. The Fathmans were inspired by Arnold Ehret's teachings, and just took the information and ran with it. I resonated with what they had to say, and enjoyed some of their recipes (this was in the days before dehydrators, and, I think, in the first days of the Champion juicer). Soon after that, Ann Wigmore began publishing. I found her information and I found my niche. Wigmore had her own ideas, based on proper food combining, and then some. I did not need to explore further. I just kept on going. Now, I find that I am supposed to want to be 80/10/10, but, I'm sorry, folks, I already have a religion.

I like living in New York City. I do not want to move to a farm right now or even in the foreseeable future. (I have already been a hippie and done that route... the Birkenstocks, the flowy skirts, the long hair, the no make-up - been there, done that, a long time ago.) I live in a big city on a small income, so I cannot afford to fly off for two weeks to learn about the latest version of Ann Wigmore's plan (although I was fortunate enough to be able to manage Lillian Butler's very fairly priced, very accessible, very community-oriented, very Wigmore-based Raw Soul program - www.rawsoul.com), which I highly recommend to anyone who can easily get to New York City one Monday evening a week for a month).

Recently, I have been reading Brenda Cobb's book, in which she details her conversion and understanding of Ann Wigmore's program. I am loving this book. I immediately looked her up, but her program's price is way far out of my league (unless I win the Lotto - only problem, I don't play). I looked at the place she went to learn what she learned about the program: the Ann Wigmore Foundation - www.wigmore.org - and found their prices much more manageable (I will still have to work hard for two years to manage a trip there - there are other more immediate pressing matters I have to save up for first, before I can manage a vacation where I will learn what Lillian Butler has already taught me.)

There are other offshoots of the original Ann Wigmore Institute, all with variations on the name. If one is inclined to study at a distance, there is the www.chidiet.com program, which faithfully follows Ann Wigmor'’s ideas, and allows one to study at home, at highly reasonable prices (this is the program I want to do next).

Meanwhile, I think it is worthwhile for anyone to go raw any way they can. Once you go raw, you will start to find ideas, and you will find ideas that work for you. If you are a person who wants to find a new religion, you will find someone preaching the one that works for you. If you are a person like me, you will find something that seems to make sense to you, and you will do that.

In the end, at our gathering, we decided to agree that

1- it is better to be raw.
2 - if you cannot be raw all the time, you should be raw as much of the time as you can.
3 - 75% raw is better than no percent raw.
4 - If you cannot find organic fruit and vegetables, you can still be raw.

Leaf  On Natural Wellness, by Don Haughey

Center7 Your life can be radically redesigned by involvement in natural wellness through discipline, diet and the practices that create and maintain wellness using the fifty-year-long program established by Dr. Ann Wigmore, and now practiced in many countries.

The old sayings "You are what you eat," and by Hippocrates, "Let your food be your medicine," stand for us as guidance, and many have come to Creative Health Institute with what has been ruled incurable or terminal dis-ease and found their way back to wellness.  In our twenty-six years of conducting the program we have come to agree with Dr. Ann that there are no incurable diseases, just some incurable people.

We have had trainees sponsored by hospitals do the three month program in search of ways of introducing elements of Living Foods Nutrition into hospital settings.  Indeed, catching the truth of our time, and being involved in facilitating it is imperative, if we are to check the disease patterns, extant.  What everyone learns in alternative connections is what is on the leading edge of change.

The eroding paradigm and cultural collapse is seen by all thinking people and institutions as very serious.

We can exploit this or concentrate on helping to correct the erosion.

Wonderful to say that concerned people in positions of influence are joining "The Way, the Truth, and the Life" that works for improvement in Wellness by Natural means.

Think about it.

Leaf  What Raw Living Foods Do for Me

by Dr. James Carey, PhD

I get a lot of email asking about MY story. How did I get involved with the Wigmore Program, why did I get involved, and what did it do for me? OK, I'll share.

For 23 years I lived in Key West, Florida, and built four computer companies on two continents. In '97 I'd had enough, and sold off the businesses, apartment building, office building, houses, and almost all of the stuff I'd accumulated. By the second week of January '99 I was 48 years old, free and financially liquid. I took a year off and toured the United States, traveling 60,000 miles of highways and byways, first with an Airstream trailer, later with a Bluebird motorcoach.

I also spent the year overcoming my addiction to cigarettes, something I'd been dependent upon since I was 14 years old.

By Spring of 2000 I was rested, collected, and tobacco-free. I'd relocated to rural Georgia, adopted a dog, and started building a house with my own hands. I also weighed 260 lbs. I'd been watching my weight creep up over the years, from my college weight of 165 to around 210 or 220 by '99. I considered myself healthy because at 45 I could still shinny up a 50 ft. sailboat mast and repair the masthead while holding on with my legs. But a year of sitting behind the steering wheel, and substituting junk food and rich meals for the cigarettes I was trying to give up really put the weight on me. Now I was 50, and single-handedly building a house. I considered myself to be in good shape, I was active and pain-free, but I sure was getting big.

Jim December 2000
Jim at 260 lbs.
December, 2000
Jim in August, 2005
Jim at 170 lbs.
August, 2005

So... January, 2001. New Year's Resolution - go on a diet. I read about health and nutrition, then put myself on a 1700 calorie-a-day Vegetarian diet, substituting soy products for meat. I walked at least three miles a day, five times a week. In four months I lost 20 lbs, putting my weight at 240. I kept counting calories in my little notebook, I kept walking 15 miles or more a week, and by Summer - still 240 lbs!

I could not lose any more weight. Very frustrating. If I went off my diet for a special weekend in Savannah I'd gain 5 lbs in two days, then take a week or more to get it back off.

Back to the Internet, researching. I learned about toxicity, raw living foods, and various programs. I read webpages written by people that had been on one diet or another, sometimes for a decade, but after initial improvements their health deteriorated, and they were facing new health challenges because of the inadequacies of the dietary lifestyle they'd adopted.

The more I studied, the more one program stood out. The raw living foods lifestyle, as taught by Dr. Ann Wigmore. It was old knowledge going back thousands of years, and she was the most famous of modern advocates. What impressed me most were:

1) There are testimonies by people that have lived the lifestyle for 20, 30 and 40 years, and are thriving on it.

2) The Wigmore program combines raw living food, internal cleansing, and bodily detoxification. Three or more elements rolled into one.

3) There are hands-on training centers where one can go and experience the program for an extended period of time, and not just try to sort it out from a bunch of books or a weekend seminar.

4) Most of these hands-on centers are reasonably priced - I've paid as much for one night at a nice hotel for what they charge for a week-long training program.

5) What does the founder look like today, or what did they die of? Dr. Ann died of smoke inhalation while fighting a fire, at 84. She was fit and healthy. I've never been impressed when someone tries to sell me a lifestyle that doesn't work for them.

6) Other notable raw fooders have, over the years, died as a result of accidents in their 80's and 90's, not of disease or medications. All maintained an active lifestyle up until their passing over.

7) Wigmore is an educational program, not "do this because I say so." At the training centers they teach why the body isn't healthy, and what you can do about it. As an engineer and scientist, I appreciate this.

I could go on, but suffice to say, the more I looked at it the more the Wigmore Program stood out as being the program that would work for me.

Synchronicity came into play at this time, and an old friend from Key West called. When I mentioned the Wigmore Program she told me that she'd been through the program herself, several years earlier, and credited it with saving her gall bladder.

August of '01 found me at Creative Health Institute, near Union City, Michigan. On a trip North to visit family I stopped in for a three-day visit. I was so impressed with the personal experiences of the guests that I went back to Georgia, closed up the farm, and returned to Michigan. I still weighed 240 lbs.

In my first two weeks at Creative Health I lost 20 lbs. I never went hungry, I never missed a meal, I never counted a calorie. Indeed, I usually had a second helping at lunch or dinner. At the end of the first month I was down to 210 lbs. When I headed back for Georgia just before Christmas, I weighed 200 lbs.

Why did the program work so dramatically for me?

I was toxic. Not only did the organic, unprocessed food that Creative Health served reduce or eliminate the toxins that I was putting into my body, the program of drinking wheatgrass juice and doing daily enemas helped my body eliminate toxins that I'd been accumulating all of my life.

By eating processed foods, I'd been putting toxins into my body faster than my body could remove them. I learned that my body was storing these toxins in fat cells in order to protect me. Once I eliminated the toxins I was ingesting, my body was able to quickly process the backlogged accumulation.

I also had a large amount of impacted fecal matter. Most people do, I learned. The enemas cleared out this backlog. That's probably why my initial weight loss was so dramatic. All of this I learned in the program.

Since '01 I've spent three to six months of the year at Creative Health, helping out as a volunteer as I helped myself get healthier. I weigh 180 lbs now, and my weight is still slowly declining. I expect to stabilize around 165-170, what I weighed in college when I was on the wrestling team. I can stay pretty raw at home, but I can't come close to the yummy food they create and serve at Creative Health.

The other thing that keeps me going back to Creative Health is the rewarding feeling when I see others overcome their health challenges. I've seen people heal their diabetes, obesity, arthritis, colitis, after-effects of chemotherapy, breast cancer, hepatitis, heavy metal poisoning, asthma, wounds that won't heal, PMS, migraine headaches... all kinds of health challenges. I've even seen people stop smoking, painlessly, in just a few days. They didn't even notice that they'd quit. Wish I knew that back in '99.

I try to help Creative Health in their mission. I've installed computers and a network, rewrote the website, taught various classes, mowed the lawn, started this newsletter, served as Program Director, done public speaking, fixed toilets, painted buildings, made videos, answered the phones, stuffed envelopes, told my story on TV and radio, and created and market the Home Study Program (chiDiet.com) for those who can't get away for a session at Creative Health.

Through all of this I've watched people perk up, heal, and get happy. Like Chantel from Zimbabwe. She came to Creative Health with rheumatoid arthritis, which she'd had since she was 16. She was 26. At graduation, after completing the two-week program, Chantel said, "I stopped taking my medication after I was here three days. I've not had any pain in a week." With tears streaming down her cheeks, she said, "This is the best I have felt since I was 15 years old."

Last summer Chantel sent me an email. "While I am only 75% raw after these two years, I am not taking medication, and my pain has not returned. I am happy to tell you that I am now married and three months pregnant. Your program made this possible. Thank you, thank you, thank you."

What did raw living foods do for me?

They helped me lose over 60 lbs, they gave me an energy level that's like being 25 again (I even took up skydiving).

Instead of sleeping 8-10 hours a night, I awaken totally refreshed after only 4-6 hours of sleep.

My bowels are regular and move easily.

I'm happier - all the time. I have a more positive outlook on life. People say I "glow," and I smile all the time.

My cravings for snacks, sweets and caffeine have disappeared.

Most of all, I find my life more satisfying and rewarding than it's ever been before.

Leaf  In The News

There is so much raw vegan-related material in the news now that I'm only posting the most significant articles in the newsletter. If you visit chiDiet.net you'll find the 25 most recent posts on the home page, and over 1600 current and former articles, sorted by category. Of particular note are the growing number of events under the headings Raw Lifestyle Special Events and Raw Lifestyle Meetings and Events. There's lots of new recipes, too. The categories listed below are direct links to the weblog.

The Almond Fiasco - The USDA has implemented new regulations that raw almonds be "pasteurized" either with steam heat or with the toxic fumigant propylene oxice, which, by the way, is banned in Canada, Mexico and Europe. The California Almond Board, environmentalists, and consumers have so far been stonewalled trying to get implementation postponed. Under the regulations, fumigated almonds would still be labeled "raw." As a further insult to U.S. organic almond farmers, imported almonds need not be treated. - from Acres USA, Dec. 2007.

Read about Dr. Flora's experience with the new "pasteurized" almonds: http://rawlivingfoods.typepad.com/1/2007/11/problems-with-n.html.

1onionheads USDA now wants to regulate Raw Veggies - The USDA is accepting public comments until December 3 on a new proposed rule that would force small farms growing green leafy vegetables, such as spinach and lettuce, to put into place industrial-style sterilization measures that reduce biodiversity and soil fertility.

The proposal follows in the wake of the USDA's recent controversial crackdown on raw almonds, continued interference with raw milk production, and bans on the sale of locally produced organic meat directly to consumers. The proposed rules basically cover up the fact that e-coli 0157H contamination in lettuce and spinach crops comes from feedlot or industrial livestock-contaminated irrigation waters or contamination in large processing plants. The rule limits hedgerows, and other non-crop vegetation commonly found on and around small organic and sustainable farms.

In addition, although every organic farmer knows that healthy soil is literally alive with multiple types of healthy bacteria, the rules also discourage the development of beneficial microbial life in the soil. Send a message to the USDA today.
