Renata in the Raw - Wow, What a
Weekend! |
- [Renata Dorner is Assistant to Dr. James Carey of
chiDiet.com.
- Last weekend, July 14th-15th, Renata and I went to
Atlanta for a seminar on gourmet raw vegan foods. Gideon and Jackie Graff were
kind enough to open their house to us, and we stayed as their guests and
attended their two-day seminar.
- Not only did we have a wonderful time, but we learned a
lot. I've been living the minimalist raw living foods lifestyle - throw a bunch
of sprouts and greens in the blender and call it a meal.
Jackie and Gideon showed me how easy it would be to prepare something more
appetizing for guests - truly inspiring.
- I could say a lot more kind things about the Graffs, but
Renata was moved to write the following article and she's expressed my feelings
completely - James.]
Oh WOW, What a Weekend it Was.
Jackie
and Gideon Graff, the Sprout people from Atlanta (www.sproutrawfood.org) hosted a
two-day seminar: How to Prepare Raw Gourmet Food. It was like Easter,
Thanksgiving and Christmas combined. What a feast it was!
We started out with an
almond-carob-banana shake for breakfast which tasted decadent. The grande
finale was lasagna and zucchini spaghetti with marinara sauce so delicious you
will forsake the wheat version in no time. And every dish in between was
superb, just the right spicing, texture and presentation.
I learned so many tricks and
hints which make raw food preparation even easier than it already is. Jackie
and Gideon prepared many, many different gourmet dishes which are readily
duplicatable. The trick is to use prime quality ingredients.
A bit of splurging now and
then is necessary once one has been on the healing path for a while and the
body has regained strength and health. Remember when we were on the cooked food
trip? How often did we go out and not think twice about spending our
well-earned money on a meal which was not worth it and was actually detrimental
to our health? So, some pine nuts here and there, some macadamia nuts instead
of sunflower seeds give our palate enticing tastes and help us to stay on the
raw food path.
Sometimes I simply need a bit
more than greens, a little indulgence, a festive meal, something extravagant,
exciting. That's what Jackie and Gideon taught us with lots of patience,
explanations and detailed demonstration. No question - there were lots of
questions - no question remained unanswered. With skill, laughter and sincere
dedication the Graffs shared freely their many years of raw wisdom.
We were a wonderful mixed
group, novices and veteran raw foodists. We swapped stories. One story was
extraordinary: From 22 to 2 - size 22, that is - the story of a
young lady's weight loss when she switched from SAD to Raw. I hope James will
get the whole story sooner or later, keep your eyes open. It demonstrates such
an outstanding example how food choice and preparation influence our health and
well-being.

Thank you, Jackie and
Gideon.

The Importance of Eating on a
Schedule |
A very common ailment among people today is low
hydrochloric acid in the stomach. This results in poor digestion of food and
reduces the body's ability to extract nutrients from the foods we eat.
When we eat on a regular schedule the body recognizes
this and begins producing extra stomach acid when mealtimes roll around. I eat
on the Creative Health Institute schedule - 7:30 am, 12:30 and 5:30 pm.
I don't even need a clock to tell me that it's mealtime.
About 15 minutes before mealtime I can feel my stomach start to change, and my
hunger grows greatly. If I haven't eaten lunch by 1 pm (for example), my
stomach starts to growl. This is from the increased stomach acid looking for
work to do.
There are lots of reasons that Raw Living Fooders are
healthier - enzymes, organic food, pure water, sprouts - but eating on a
regular schedule really helps our bodies to make the most of all these
wonderful foods we're eating.
"There are only two ways to live your life. One
is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a
miracle." - Albert Einstein
Backslider's Corner - Raw and Living in the
Wild |
It's "working outdoors" season here at the
cabin. It's also poison ivy season.
The first summer I lived here I had 28 cases of poison
ivy, each lasting for two weeks or so. Yes, that means I had multiple cases of
the skin rash in different stages of development, for about 9 months.
I became an expert on the subject, thanks to the Canadian
CDC website, and knew more than I ever wanted to know about the causes of
poison ivy infection, "effective" lotions and treatment. Lotions (or
simply gray clay) would take the itching away, but each case still lasted for a
bit over two weeks.
I was on the SAD back then. This summer Renata and I have
been removing a lot of brush and vines, and generally beautifying the property.
For that reason I've been exposed to poison ivy a LOT.
I've had six instances of poison ivy so far this summer.
Each one began as an itchy spot. I rubbed some lotion on it, and within 48
hours - usually 24 - the itch went away. Only twice did the itching erupt into
a skin rash. In both of those cases I rubbed more lotion or clay on it, simply
to reduce the itch. Again, within 24 hours the the rash was gone, and I was
over the infection.
So why is the poison ivy going away in one to two days
instead of lasting for two weeks or more? It's not because I'm becoming immune.
According to the Canadian CDC, the more you're exposed to poison ivy the more
susceptible you are to it.
The only explanation I can find is that I'm eating almost
100% raw living foods and my body is now capable of healing itself much
quicker. Indeed, if I had done this same clearing work eight years ago, my body
would be covered in poison ivy and I'd be bathing in Caladryl® or clay lotion three times a day, and people would be
calling me "mudman."
Inspiring developments like this really reduce my
Backsliding.
Backsliding but progressing is NOT about feeling guilty
about slipping. Even if you weren't 100% raw this week, how much better are
you feeling than when you were on the SAD?
Vegan 2 Raw Vegan - Movie
Review |
Yesterday I had the privilege of viewing a wonderful
movie - Vegan 2 Raw Vegan,
by Mike Fields of New Zealand (yes, he got his wife Cathy into the flick
<g>). A film that asks, "Will it make a difference?"
Steven Prussack of Raw Vegan Radio said, "One of my
favorite raw films is Vegan 2 Raw
Vegan. Not only was the film incredible, but the information is
priceless! The first film that shows the difference going raw could make for
an already health-conscious vegan! I absolutely loved it."
Most vegans would say their diet is pretty good. Could
going 100% raw make a difference? As Mike transitions from vegan to raw vegan
he goes in search of anyone else who has even heard of raw vegan. He finds an
interesting variety of individuals and advocates.
You could consider this film a sequel to Morgan
Spurlock's popular film, Supersize
Me! Like Spurlock, Fields
embarks upon a 30-day challenge, then films a video diary of his challenges and
rewards as his body adjusts to a new lifestyle.
Like Spurlock, Fields does this with medical supervision.
Unlike Spurlock, Fields ends up enjoying the adventure
and the changes he goes through. For the first week or so he finds the
emotional and medical changes challenging, but as time progresses and his body
detoxifies he finds the results quite rewarding.
I especially enjoyed the video technique when he asked
his guests the questions, "What did your family and friends think about
you going raw?" The replies (cut/cut/cut) - "They thought I was
crazy," "They thought I was crazy," "They thought I was
daft," "They thought I was crazy," and "What did this
diet do for you?" - "It saved my life," "It saved my
life," "It changed my life," "It saved my life,"
"It saved my life." I identified with those people so much that I was
laughing out loud.
A friend saw the video on my desk and commented, "I
didn't think much of the movie." Upon viewing it, I saw that she was
considering the movie from an entertainment viewpoint. It's not an
"entertainment" movie - it's a documentary. And as a documentary, I
think Fields and friends did an excellent job. When I mentioned this opinion to
her, she agreed.
I especially recommend this film to anybody
considering, or even curious about the Raw Vegan Lifestyle. It shows you
what you can expect when transitioning, and what the potential benefits are to
you and your body.
We began this article with the question, "Will it
make a difference?" Mike Fields concludes, "Yes!"
Two thumbs up!

Dr. Flora on Diabetes and
Fibromyalgia |
[Dr. Flora van Orden III was Dr. Ann Wigmore's
personal assistant for over 20 years, and we consider her a prime source for
advice on Dr. Ann's teachings. The following letters are dialogs between Dr.
Flora and newsletter readers. There's a lot of good info here for everyone.
Reprinted with permission. - James.]
Hi Jim,
Wonderful newsletter and information. I hope to visit you next summer.
I am Diabetic and have been diagnosed with Fibromyalgia
recently. I am scheduled to go to a local Pain Clinic tomorrow for
injections.
I have been eating well and exercising, but am still in a
lot of physical pain. Is there anything you know of that will work more
directly on my pain? I will keep researching, but just thought I would
ask.
Thanks,
Doug
---------------------------------
I'm passing your query on to Dr. Flora, who's more
qualified to respond to it.
I can tell you this - diabetes and fibromyalgia respond wonderfully to raw
living foods.
James
---------------------------------
Fibromyalgia is considered by Dr. Hulda Clark in her book
"The Cure for All Diseases". Please read it.
Here is a small part of the teleconference tonight.
Dr. T.
Colin Campbell: 7/18/07: Professor Emeritus of Nutritional Biochemistry
at Cornell University, who has published
The
China Study concerning the Chinese lack of cancers because they don't use
dairy in many places. "I started out wanting to learn more about how to
get higher levels of protein from animals. Then, I saw children under the age
of 4 coming up with liver cancer and wanted to know why. In India, rats being
experimented on for the same kind of cancers, came up with that cancer with
increased intake of animal protein. Then I went to VA tech for 27 years to find
the answer to the question Was it really true that extra protein intake
would turn on this type of cancer? The animals were exposed to chemical
carcinogens. Could it have been that? When fed an amount of protein in excess
than what is needed for good nutrition, cancer followed. Nutrition had a
dramatic effect on cancer. When higher levels of protein were fed, cancers were
turned on.
Principles - The major discovery was that we could turn on cancer by feeding
milk protein. The effect of cow's milk protein on initiating cancer was
greater than any other kind of protein's effect, even though there were
multiple mechanisms that turned it on. It was a question of plant-based
protein turning cancer off. Animal protein turning cancer on.
We were involved in a large nationwide survey in the People's Republic of
China. For about a dozen different kinds of cancers, the people were consuming
too much protein. Lower protein intake, less cancer. We explored all
manner of diseases. We explored dietary introduction of relatively small
amounts of animal protein and found that it would increase heart disease,
cancer and other diseases. Plant based diets - vegetables, fruits,
whole grain foods - really reversed heart disease. I can't overemphasize how
important a plant based diet is. For our health, use whole vegetables. Don't
add salt, sugar, and fat. The closer we get to a plant based diet, the
healthier we get. Health care calls are rising, mental health costs
are rising. We need to promote the use of a plant based diet.
The Chinese caloric intake is high, but many generally don't eat any animal
protein.
There was a question about the chemistry of animal protein. Its sulfate
makes the ph of the body too acid. John MacDougall knows about this more
than I. We don't need fish. Comment of listener: Dr. Mercola indicated that
EPA/DHA conversion is only made with fish oil, not with plants.
Fish have no antioxidants. No fiber. It's better to use flax seed,
walnuts.
What about controlling gene expression? I am not in support of individual
nutrient supplements. I think they are a bit of a hoax.

Dr. Flora on Breast Cancer - a
Dialog |
[Dr. Flora's letters and comments are in italics.]
--------------
Sent: Saturday, July 14, 2007 5:37 PM
To: jcarey@jcarey.com
Subject: did you write this or do you agree with it?
Hi, I have breast cancer - why not???
"No Braggs or olive
oil ever should be allowed in the Institute, and not more than
1/4th of an avocado or the same amount of seed or nut cheese
should be allowed a student who is challenged with cancer, heart
condition or diabetes."
CD, New Zealand
--------------
I'm passing your query on to Dr. Flora, who wrote
the
article [Dr. Flora Responds to Janet Ng]. She'll answer it much
better than I can.
James
--------------
Dr. Flora responds:
Look at the DVD "Eating" from RAVEdiet.com. 470 physicians in DC
at the 1st International Continuing Medical Education Seminar on Nutrition with
George Washington University sponsoring it, got the DVD and it's changed the
lives of everyone who has seen it.
I've already seen research that the test results with
olive oil come back causing cancer 17% of the time. Do you want a quart
of gasoline on your fire instead of a gallon? You will not get well with any
clarified oil in your diet. Only 2 ounces of avocado diced on your Energy
Soup at one time, or a tablespoon of flax seed (not oil) that has been soaked
for 10 minutes and blended in with some greens or soaked almonds, or
watermelon, etc., or the wonderful oils that are present in such great foods as
dulse, purslane, buckwheat greens, sunflower/sesame seed cheese, etc.
Please Google Braggs Liquid Aminos and look past the 1st page to the
conversations of various users with Patricia Braggs. I personally was crippled
by using it and it nearly ruined my kidneys. I wrote to Patricia about it twice
and she never answered me. You will find a great letter written by a woman who
worked for her. See what happens when you quit using it. Your legs will open
back up. Your veins and arteries will come back to life as the capillaries
begin to flow again.
Please read "The No Dairy Anti-Breast Cancer Program" by Dr. Jane
Plant of England, who lost a breast, had chemo and radiation 5 times when it
appeared in the other breast and spread all over her trunk, and who got
involved with the
China
Study. Women don't have cancer in China who have never used dairy. She
threw away her ghee and yogurt and that was 2 decades ago with no
return.
Peace and Love,

Thank you for your reply Dr.
Before I got my cancer I was living for six years under
the close vicinity of a couple of huge power pylons, my husband left me in a
dreadful area with two young children and I was consuming lots of extra virgin
olive oil. Lots as a dressing and in smoothies.
I think flaxseed oil is the best one for my situation; my
skin is very dry and I don't eat any dairy or get any other fat; no wheat or
flesh either.
I chucked the Braggs without any further ado.
Kind regards, CD.
C, you need good oils. The flax seed (not the oil) is
very valuable and necessary for you. One tablespoon soaked in a little water
for 10 minutes and then blended with watermelon and greens is perfect.
The wonderful oils in avocado (no more than 2 ounces
diced on top of the Energy Soup) are perfect in the a.m. In the p.m., a couple
of ounces of almond cream made with 12 organic almonds soaked overnight and
rinsed and blended with fresh water.
Use a natural bristle body brush dry and on wet skin
use a loofa. Always brush towards the heart and use no soap or anything with
isopropyl alcohol, or wax, or cream.
Thank you lovely lady. Which of the books do you
recommend I buy to guide me with my diet and my tumour? I'll send you a picture
so you know what I'm about - my hand and arm down that side are swollen and
there is nerve pain, which I'm taking Panadol 6x / day for.
[Photo shows a large tumor extruding from the side of her
breast. Very shocking. Deleted by editor at the request of Dr. Flora, for
privacy reasons.]
[One of these years in the future, people will recoil
in horror that once there was actually surgery to remove something that is
basically all over one's body but is just sticking out somewhere in the weakest
area of communication, where someone has been prevented from sharing feelings.
- Flora]
C, I have worked with people who have had the whole
half of a breast or more in that same condition and worse.
The
wheat grass poultice works miracles. You must consider that your very life is
at stake and that the blended Energy Soup is going to save your life.
My first thought is why did you let it get this far.
You must really want to live and get rid of any thoughts of wanting to 'pay
someone back' for something that happened earlier in your life.
Many women heal but go back to a way of eating that
will promote the growth of the cells because they are too cold also. You need
to stay sweaty and uncomfortable for all of that stuff to soften up. Let me
know where you have been and who has used wheat grass juice poultices for you.
You need to have someone make the wheat grass juice for you if you cannot make
it yourself, and then pour it on the pulp which has been packed on top of your
breast, with towels and plastic underneath.
I want to get permission from you to allow our
conversation to be shared with others so that they can learn. If you would
rather not, that's OK. The wheat grass juice will die in 15 minutes so it has
to be done every 20 minutes or so. You must not eat one drop of oil or one bite
of grain because the cancer will feed on this.
Yes, by all means use the process to help anyone who
needs it.
I have been taking many Natures Sunshine products
including paw paw cell regulator and pau d'arco and stemcell enhance; but I
think the problem is that I don't give up entirely on food. I've lost lots of
weight but find it hard to get excited about the juices and salads...
Do the energy soup and make some sauerkraut to go
with it. Everything needs to be blended.
I do okay on fruit...
No you don't. You have to eat fruits every hour or
you get hungry and you can't get everything you need on fruit. You get their
sugars for energy, but you need the green chlorophyll and minerals from dulse
and chlorophyll for healing.
but get hungry and then I cheat in a cafe.
Don't go to the cafe anymore until you have your
healed breast again. You don't need the coffee.
So its an emotional as well as a physical 'craving.'
You may be addicted to the caffeine and the
atmosphere.
Or just lack of self-discipline.
Take a look at your picture again and tell yourself
you want to get well and live.
I have been doing lots (of pills as above) but no it
hasn't stopped it. I bought some wheatgrass but when I heard it was grown in
potting mix a doubt crept in as to how good it was, or not. I am going to plant
some today in soil...
My friends will come in and tell you about the soil
and how to prepare it..
Okay. No oil or grain. Also no sugar, salt, flesh or
dairy? I understand my body needs enzymes, but is that all it can have;
categorically and nothing else?
You don't want anything that doesn't have enzymes in
it, because that will not grow new cells. Dead food does not grow new healthy
cells. Living food grows cells and gets rid of old dead cells by sloughing them
off as the new cells push up.
I'm sorry to harp on, it's just that I have read around
and there are so many different methods. Some people say 80% raw with anything
else. What do you think?
100% for now. With live food you will live; with dead
food you feed your cells food that will make them die.
Wheatgrass pulp goes onto the tumour from the juiced
wheatgrass, and then the juice is poured onto it and left on for 15 minutes.
How many applications should I do and do you want me to drink any?
I want you to assimilate wheatgrass juice from both
ends, with 4 ounce implants and with taking 2 ounces orally one sip at a time,
chewing it as if it were a solid for 2 minutes as it becomes absorbed in the
roof of your mouth and under your tongue and in your lymphatic system, and
rushes down into your breast tissue from the inside as you put the poultices on
the outside.
Every 20 minutes or so you put new wheatgrass juice
on top of the poultice. If you need help, put out the word and people will
help. You can either go to an institute where they do that every day, or do it
at home. Don't make the juice and stop and have a conversation with anyone. Get
it in immediately.
Peace and Love,

Raw Living Foods®
Home Study Program |
The Home Study Program about the Raw Living Foods® Lifestyle was developed from the teachings of Dr. Ann
Wigmore at Creative Health Institute. I started putting this program
together when I was Director of CHI because many of the people I talked to
either didn't have the time to attend the two-week hands-on program in
Michigan, or, if they had the time, they couldn't afford the cost.
What sets the Dr. Ann Wigmore Raw Living Foods® Lifestyle apart from other raw food and detox programs
is its thoroughness. Often when reading articles about other programs I
laugh and say, "We have that!"
For example:
- The "Energy Soup Diet" - we have that.
- "Colonics and enemas for detoxification" - yep, we teach that.
- "Living" vs. "raw but dead" foods - yep, we teach about
that.
- Wheatgrass juice? Yep, that's one of our cornerstones.
- Gardening, composting, sprouting, purifying water, lightly fermented foods,
food combining, transitioning to living foods, yummy raw living food
preparation, exercise, internal cleansing, colon health, lymphatic system
health, nutritional & dietary balance, lots of greens, dehydrating,
alternative medicine, cooked foods as an addiction and staying on the program
The Home Study Program covers all of those subjects
and more. It's like buying a dozen of the programs advertised on TV, only
better!
In the 5+ years that I've been involved with CHI and Dr.
Ann's Raw Living Foods® lifestyle I've yet to see as
complete an approach to healthy living as that taught by Dr. Ann.
Starting with a file cabinet full of documents and
research, and over 300 hours of videotape, we've distilled Raw Living
Foods® Lifestyle instruction to a 350 page manual
and 50 hours of video instruction.
Yes, that's a lot of study material, but that's
what it takes to make an informed change to a lifestyle of erroneous
information and habit patterns. Wade through it, and it'll change your
life.
Surrounded, as we are, by increasing toxicity in our food
and environment, eating a pure and healthy diet is more important than ever.
More and more people are starting to see that, and I believe that's why the Raw
and Living Foods Movement is growing so fast. People see that the Standard
American Diet and the current medical paradigm don't work.

The Raw Living Foods Home Study Program is
available as a set or as a subscription. Please visit
chiDiet.com for more information.
Janet Ng Update |
"If you find it in your heart to care for
somebody else, you will have succeeded."
- Maya Angelou
Two weeks ago we ran
an article
about a fund-raiser for Janet Ng. Last week
Dr. Flora had
some comments for Janet. The story continues:
James,
I spoke with Janet this morning. She had her surgery on
Monday. Today she received the path report which said it was a benign Phyllodes
Tumor and the lymph was not involved.
I looked it up in the Merck Manual and it said it is a
rare form of fibroadenoma, cystosarcoma phyllodes, is characterized by
its large size and rapid growth. Like a malignant tumor, it tends to recur
locally if inadequately removed, but it only rarely metastasizes to regional
lymph nodes or distant organs. Radical mastectomy is unwarranted; wide excision
or simple mastectomy generally is the treatment of choice.
She is doing very well and told me I could let you know
the results of the report for the newsletter.

frozen wheatgrass juice??! xo

Nonononononononono. Fresh juiced only, within 15 minutes
of being juiced. We shared the articles because of the mold issue, that's all.

Dr. Flora's New Blog |
James,
A wonderful friend has set up a blog for me because it
seems that I am repeating myself over and over trying to answer questions from
all over the world and I need to find a better way.
As I have learned from the two wonderful men who
published the two different e-books for me, It seems when I try to sit down and
write a pamphlet or booklet, that it doesn't work half as well as if someone
asks me a question and then I can go off on that. So, if you have any people
who would like to learn more about Dr. Wigmore's techniques/life/thoughts, then
just have them write to drflora3rd.com and
ask me and I will do my best to fill them in.
I am very busy in the daytime trying to organize classes to teach the staff,
parents and children of the YWCA's day care centers about wellness and good
nutrition, but as you know, the living food lifestyle leaves a lot of hours
left over to do other things.
I have said that I took a vow never to charge for my
services as a doctor if it had anything to do with Dr. Wigmore's Living Food
Program, but since then, I've learned a lot from the Physicians Committee for
Responsible Medicine, and Earth Save, not about what to eat, but about what not
to eat (even though I don't eat those things anymore), I can at least try to
explain, in layman's terms, what the doctors have no time to do, unless they
are involved with PCRM@PCRM.com or the many
websites that they have started, about diabetes, or heart disease reversal or
prevention or their NutritionMD website where doctors can learn about
nutrition.
Perhaps, with your input, I can write some little
pamphlets and booklets and sell them over the internet and thereby gain some
passive income. It is great to learn and great to teach, and many doctors are
very receptive. This is a great time of coming together and sharing. Thank you
for your input and help.
It's important that we work toward changing the government's guidelines. No
children should be given pasteurized/homogenized milk 3 times a day like the
government now requires.
It's important that we give our physicians a copy of the book that PCRM is
making available to all 2nd year medical doctors now about what foods to
recommend or restrict for optimum reversal and prevention of disease.
It's important that we listen to the doctors in their twice-a-month
teleconference from PCRM to see how they are trying hard to educate themselves
about nutrition. I am SO excited about what I've heard so far.
Peace and Love,
