Raw Foods
Disaster
- reprinted with permission
Jim, I tried the raw foods for several weeks, when my blood sugar level began spike then drop down way too low, causing my blood pressure to swing far too high. When I had an episode of tingly feet and face and extremely light-headed, my daughter ran me to my doctor's.
My blood pressure was over 200/100 and my blood sugar had dropped to 53. Doctor said for whatever reason my pancreas decided to go out of wack and I have become hypoglycemic.
So now I am limited to 2 small fruits a day and 5 to 6 mini meals that include a protein form and a whole grain, with lots of veggies, preferably green. But no more green smoothies because the sugar from the fruit effects my pancreas too much.
It has taken about a month and a half to get my body regulated that I don't have the low blood sugar symptoms that wipe me out physically and mentally. Doctor, who is Seven-Day Adventist, said not everyone can do the raw foods diet because of the high sugar in whether it is juice or in smoothies. Goes into the body too fast and not all bodies can handle this.
I would suggest you and others who are promoting raw foods to be sure and let people know that this is NOT for all people. To check with physician before venturing in this direction. If I had done this, he would advise me it is not for me because my normal blood sugar level is low normal with a family history over several generations of hypoglycemia and diabetes in middle age.
I think the concept is good, but not for everyone.

We're so sorry to hear this, Becky.
The Dr. Ann Wigmore program - the Raw Living Foods Lifestyle - advocates small amounts of fruit for most of the year, grains and nuts for protein, and lots of green veggies (which also are a protein source) - about 50% of your daily volume. The fruit in energy soup should be used sparingly, just enough to take out the bitterness. Yes, fruit smoothies are yummy, but yes, we need to be careful about eating too much fruit. Sounds like you were on a fruitarian diet, which I agree can be dangerous.
The diet your physician has you on now is very close to what Dr. Ann Wigmore taught. Your experience shows why the programs at Creative Health Institute in Michigan, the Ann Wigmore Institute in Puerto Rico, and the chiDiet.com Home Health Education mail-order program are so different, and so important. Be Your Own Doctor, currently out-of-print, was Dr. Ann's most significant work, but all of her books stressed health education, and learning to listen to your body.
There is no one simple regime we can follow, no magic bullet to health. Instead, we each need to become responsible for our own health and well-being, physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually, and that's what's emphasized in the Wigmore Living Foods Lifestyle programs. What's right for one person can be tragic for another, as you've so sadly learned.
Your comments are greatly appreciated, and I'd like to pass them on to others. May I use your letter in an article?
Thanks for sharing with us.
Sincerely Yours,
Jim Carey

Recognizing a Stroke
-thanks to Jan Jensen for sharing this with us
During a BBQ a friend stumbled and took a little fall - she assured everyone that she was fine (they offered to call paramedics) and just tripped over a brick because of her new shoes. They got her cleaned up and got her a new plate of food - while she appeared a bit shaken up, Ingrid went about enjoying herself the rest of the evening.
Ingrid's husband called later telling everyone that his wife had been taken to the hospital - (at 6:00pm Ingrid passed away.)
She had suffered a stroke at the BBQ - had they known how to identify the signs of a stroke perhaps Ingrid would be with us today. It only takes a minute to read this:
Recognizing a Stroke
A neurologist says that if he can get to a stroke victim within 3 hours he can totally reverse the effects of a stroke... totally. He said the trick was getting a stroke recognized, diagnosed and getting to the patient within 3 hours, which is tough.
Remember the "3 steps."
Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify. Unfortunately, the lack of awareness spells disaster. The stroke victim may suffer brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke. Now doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three simple questions:
1. Ask the individual to SMILE.
2. Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS.
3. Ask the person to SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE (Coherently) (i.e. . . It is sunny out today).
If he or she has trouble with any of these tasks, call 9-1-1 immediately and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher. After discovering that a group of non-medical volunteers could identify facial weakness, arm weakness and speech problems, researchers urged the general public to learn these three questions.
They presented their conclusions at the American Stroke Association's annual meeting last February. Widespread use of this test could result in prompt diagnosis and treatment of the stroke, and prevent brain damage.

You can check your blood pressure regularly, for free, at most pharmacies. I do it a couple of times a month. To learn something really interesting, rush into the store, jump into the machine, and press the button. Look about yourself, being very self-conscious, while the test is running. Note the numbers.
Then close your eyes, and take a dozen or more slow, deep breaths. Relax. Breathe. Keep your eyes closed. When you're completely at ease, gently press the button again, then close your eyes and relax while the test runs a second time. Note the new numbers.
What does that tell you? How can you apply this knowledge to your daily life?
One Big Green Smoothie a day is a great start... By that we mean lots of greens, and just a bit of fruit. The rest of your healthier lifestyle will come with time.
This is a lifestyle choice, not a religion. Even if you're not eating 100% raw, how much better are you doing than when you were on the SAD (Standard American Diet)? Eating outside of the program is nothing to feel guilty about.

(HealthDay News) -- Blood pressure is the pressure of blood applied to the walls of the arteries when the heart beats (the top number -- called systolic pressure), and when it's at rest (diastolic pressure). (HR 4167). By passing the National Uniformity of Food Labeling Act, they bowed

For decades the Dr. Ann Wigmore Living Foods Lifestyle has helped diabetics get their health challenges under control. We've also noticed that people with early-stage Alzheimer's Disease respond quite well to the program. Recently researchers at Rhode Island Hospital and Brown Medical School have discovered that insulin and its receptors drop significantly in the brain during the early stages of Alzheimer's disease, and that levels decline progressively as the disease becomes more severe, leading to further evidence that Alzheimer's is a type of diabetes: www.lifespan.org/news/2005/11/RIH_Alzheimer_11_30_05.htm.
(Reuters Health) - Research hints that not getting enough sleep each night, or getting too much sleep, may increase a person's risk of developing non-insulin dependent (type 2) diabetes, independent of other factors: news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20060310/hl_nm/sleep_diabetes_dc.
(Reuters) - Drug companies cannot blame long product testing times for the rising prices of medicines, researchers said on Tuesday. They said that in fact, the time it takes to get a drug from idea to the market is not increasing and some potential blockbuster drugs are tested and approved very quickly: news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20060307/hl_nm/drug_testing_prices_dc.
(American Cancer Society) More Americans are getting the message that colorectal cancer screening is important: health.yahoo.com/news/145010. This is another health challenge that responds quite well to the Raw Living Foods Lifestyle.
(American Cancer Society) A new study says regular physical activity may not have an impact on a woman's risk of colorectal cancer: health.yahoo.com/news/144855.
(American Cancer Society) Substantial evidence from clinical trials has established that obesity significantly increases the risk for heart disease and diabetes. More recently, suspicions that obesity is linked to prostate cancer have been supported by a number of investigations: health.yahoo.com/news/144955.
(Reuters Health) - A history of anxiety disorders or depression, particularly at a young age, may put women at greater risk of obesity, researchers reported Monday: news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20060307/hl_nm/depression_spur_weight_dc.

Jim's Green Smoothie Recipe
- by Jim Carey, bachelor, and practitioner of the Raw
Living Foods Lifestyle
- since so many have asked
Start with a 64 oz Vitamix
add 3 cups filtered water
add chopped kale leaves until blender is full
reduce it down by running blender for 5-10 seconds
add red and green leaf lettuce until blender is full
reduce it down for 5-10 seconds
add 1-2 stalks chopped celery
add small amount of collard greens
add small handful of sprouts, as available
add handful of dandelion greens from the yard
add other assorted greens as available
reduce and repeat as necessary until blender is almost full of blended
greens.
Run blender on high for 15-30 seconds.
Taste. Make face.
Now the creativity begins.
Add water if necessary
add 1/2 avocado, or one banana
add some freshly ground flax from old coffee grinder
run blender on high until mixture is creamy smooth.
With experience, you'll learn how to use flax to thicken the mixture.
Taste.
Smile.
Serves two, or one really hungry guy. If necessary, put leftovers in refrigerator and use as base for next meal. Better yet, feed leftovers to dog and cat, and start fresh every meal.
For variety add red pepper, onion, jalepeno, carrot tops or anything else that's green and seems halfway edible. Use new additions sparingly. Excess use of jalepeno, for example, makes for interesting bowel movements later in the day.
Out-of-control experiments can usually be fixed by splitting recipe in half, adding more leaf lettuce and perhaps another banana. All other fruits are fair game, but always use sparing. This is a "green smoothie," not a fruit smoothie. But don't hesitate to add fruit until the concoction is palatable. I've never had to toss one out yet, but some have been a challenge.
Repeat 2-3 times a day until refrigerator is empty and yard is devoid of dandelions, lambsquarter and other weeds. Augment diet with grains and nuts. Eventually one has to commit that necessary evil called "shopping," but at least now I'm done after purchasing a bit of everything in the produce aisle.
Green smoothies are an Art Form, not a Science.

Resources for Raw Fooders
