Raw Vegan vs. Raw Living
Foods vs. the Dr. Ann Wigmore Diet - The Differences
by Jim Carey
Many people talk as if a Raw Vegan Diet, a Raw Living Foods Diet, and the Dr. Ann Wigmore Living Foods Lifestyle are all the same thing. That's not true. There are significant differences between the three.
The Dr. Ann Wigmore Lifestyle isn't only a diet. It incorporates raw living foods as a component of an way of life.
Raw Vegan
A raw vegan diet, or raw foods diet, refers to a plant-based diet that does not include any animal protein. The historical basis dates back to 1500 BC. An historical summary can be found on the home page of chiDiet.com.
The scriptural foundation of the Vegan Diet is Genesis 1:29 and Exodus 20:15, "Thou shalt not kill."
Modern scientific research for a vegan diet includes the works of Dr. John Kellogg, Dr. Edmund Bordeaux Szekely, Dr. Lorraine Day and many others. Most recently and thoroughly, Dr. T. Colin Campbell, after 40 years as a government-funded nutritional researcher, published The China Study in 2005, condemning an animal protein-based diet and propounding plant-protein foods.
Raw Living Foods
Raw living foods are raw vegan with an emphasis on freshness. Living foods are those that still have the ability to sprout, grow and reproduce. Dr. Szekely and Dr. Ann Wigmore referred to this as the "life force" of the food, and found it to be a key element in nutrition. Recent research refers to it as the "biophotonic energy" of living plants.
The Importance of Enzymes
The body digests food with the aid of enzymes. Cooking destroys the enzymes present in the original, raw food. In raw living foods the enzymes required for digestion are still present in the food itself, thus the body does not need to attempt to produce them. This reduction of workload upon the body is the primary reason raw living fooders have increased energy, stamina and a reduced need for sleep.
The Dr. Ann Wigmore Lifestyle
The Wigmore lifestyle starts with raw living foods, but includes much more. It is an integrated holistic approach not only to diet, but to overall health. The cornerstone of the Wigmore Lifestyle is wheatgrass juice. The program also includes sprouts, soaking of nuts and seeds, lightly-fermented foods and advocates only fresh, non-cooked vegan foods.
Wheatgrass
The knowledge of health from grass has been around for a long time; both the
ancient Egyptians and the Chinese knew that grass was a powerful blood tonic.
In recent times the notion of health from grass was popularized by the late
Dr. Ann Wigmore. In Lithuania,
during World War I, she watched her grandmother treat injured soldiers with
grass poultices. Dr. Ann cured herself of gangrene while still in her teens,
using grass as part of the treatment. Later in life she again turned to
wheatgrass when she developed colon cancer due to the consumption of the
Standard American Diet (SAD). She presented this story in her book, Why Suffer?: How I Overcame Illness
& Pain Naturally,
Wheatgrass is actually a vegetable, not a grain. It is considered a cereal grass along with barley, alfalfa, etc. It is a complete food made up of 12% water, 70% chlorophyll bonded carbohydrates, 12% protein, 2% fat, 1.8% minerals and 2.2% crude fiber. In addition, it contains an impressive array of trace minerals, vitamins, amino acids (all 8 essential ones) and enzymes. The entire makeup of wheatgrass mirrors the components of the human body. Chlorophyll is the blood of plants. Its makeup is almost identical to that of hemoglobin in human blood. The only difference is that chlorophyll has magnesium as its central atom; whereas hemoglobin's is iron. (Lesson 3, chiDiet.com)
Internal / Colon Cleansing
Largely ignored in America because it's an uncomfortable subject for
discussion, Dr. Wigmore advocated colonic therapy as an
integral part of the Living
Foods Lifestyle because it removes the toxins that collect in the impacted
fecal matter most people carry in their intestines. The therapy of the colon
(large intestine) and its benefits have been known and practiced for hundreds
of years. Enemas and colonics cleanse by using the mechanical effect of moving
water. By repeatedly introducing and expelling water, fecal impacting and toxic
concentrations are dissolved, diluted and removed.
In the early 1900's in Battle Creek, Michigan, Dr. John H. Kellogg, M.D. extensively used colon therapy on some forty thousand of his patients. In 1917 he reported in the Journal of the American Medical Association that, in all but twenty cases, he used no surgery for the treatment of gastrointestinal disease in his patients.
The popularity of colon therapy in the United States reached its apex in the 1920's and 1930's. At that time, colon irrigation machines were commonly seen and regularly used as a standard practice in hospitals and physician's offices. But in the ensuing 70 years the public's use of, and access to this valuable health treatment greatly decreased. (Lesson 12, chiDiet.com)
Wheatgrass Implants
A rectal implant of wheatgrass juice is absorbed to cleanse the liver.
Wheatgrass implants after an enema greatly accelerate internal cleansing and
bodily healing. (Lesson 12,
chiDiet.com)
Exercise
Daily exercise is important, especially to a raw living fooder. Storm Talifero
addresses the issue in his essay on bodybuilding:
jinjee1.securesites.net/musclemass/.
He and Jinjee have a lot of good exercise advice on their website:
www.TheGardenDiet.com. (see also
Lesson 11, chiDiet.com)
The Lymphatic System
Not only did Dr. Wigmore teach that daily exercise is an important part of
health and wellness, she advocated exercises that would clean out the
Lymphatic System, as well.
Lymph fluid bathes all cell tissues and carries solid waste material from
metabolic processes in the cells to the elimination organs, mainly the colon or
large intestine.
The lymph system is very similar to the blood system (together these two systems make up the circulatory system) except that it does not have a pump, like the heart, to move the fluid around the body. Movement of lymph fluid is dependent on exercise. The diaphragm is a "lymphatic pump"; therefore, exercise is important. Just as important as exercising the cardiovascular system. While exercising and inhaling deep breaths of fresh air, the lymph flow increases 5 to 15 times. The most natural exercises are walking, dancing, swimming, singing, rebounding, deep breathing and aerobics. Moving muscles (exercise), jumping against gravity (rebounding), breathing (deep inhalation) and squeezing the tissues (massage) are all ways to move lymph in the body.
When the walls of the colon are impacted, excess mucoid plaque builds up on the walls of lymphatic vessels and cannot drain into the colon to be eliminated. For the lymph system to drain freely, first we must clean the colon. As soon as the colon is cleansed enough to relieve pressure on the lymph system, mucus is often seen in the stool. Wigmore Lifestyle students have often reported a relationship of this to improvements in chronic physical problems such as rheumatoid diseases, asthma, hay fever, allergies, cystitis, eczema and other skin diseases, edema, cellulite and inflammations of the lymph nodes. (Lessons 11 & 12, chiDiet.com)
Natural Sun
Daily sunbathing for 2 to 30 minutes is an excellent way to encourage
elimination through the skin. This is also the body's way of producing Vitamin
D.
Sweating
When the body sweats it also eliminates toxins from the system. Dr. Wigmore
kept the Hippocrates Institute at 85 degrees year-around, for this reason. One
of the reasons she opened the Wigmore
Institute in Puerto Rico was because she was tired of paying the high
winter heating bills in Boston. Sweating is very important to keeping the body
cleansed.
Dry Skin Brushing
Dry skin brushing with a natural fiber brush removes dead skin and wastes, and
stimulates the lymph system. To help cleanse the lymph system, daily dry skin
brushing is recommended. This practice helps produce clear, healthy skin that
gives off a natural glow.
Organic Food
Organic sources are important to many Raw Vegans and Raw Living Fooders, but it
was of utmost importance to Dr. Wigmore. Most seek out organics because of
their lack of pesticides and herbicides. Dr. Wigmore attached an even higher
importance to them because her research showed that organic produce contains
a much higher concentration of vitamins and minerals. In one laboratory
test, a commercially grown tomato was found to contain 4 different minerals
essential to human nutrition. In the same laboratory, organically grown
tomatoes were found to contain 12-14 of the 14 possible nutrients that they are
capable of drawing from the soil, if present.
Sprouts
Sprouts are a fantastic food for all seasons and all places. Sprouts are the
answer to people who live in northern climates and wonder how to eat locally
grown organic foods during the winter months.
Just as you give the best of everything to your baby, so does the plant yield the best of everything to its seed. When that seed begins to sprout it develops fantastic nutrients. They become the most assimilable vitamins there are, because they come wrapped with all the minerals, enzymes and still-unknown factors so necessary to the full utilization of our food.
When you plant seeds in your garden you must wait up to three months to harvest your crop. You can raise a crop of sprouts in three days. Whole grains and legumes are recommended by the USDA and nutritionists as the foundation for a healthful diet. All grains and legumes are high in fiber, protein, complex carbohydrates, and contain B-complex vitamins, calcium, chromium, magnesium, selenium, phosphorus, and zinc. All grains are also low in fat. Dr. Wigmore covered this in detail in The Sprouting Book.
Blending
In The Blending Book
Dr. Wigmore taught that our diets should be heavily based on leafy greens.
Because it requires so much chewing to break down the cellular structure of the
greens, she advocated tossing the greens in a blender, along with a piece of
fruit for taste, and reducing them to a drinkable mixture she called
"Energy Soup," thus making them much more digestible.
Victoria Boutenko, 12-year Wigmore
practitioner, expounds upon research that substantiates this in her recent
book, Green for Life,
and in her video Greens Can Save
Your Life. Dr. Wigmore's publications on the subject include The
Blending Book, Dr. Ann
Wigmore's Kitchen and Energy Soup, A Raw Living
Food.
Lightly Fermented Foods
Lightly fermented foods are easy-to-digest nourishment because they are already
partially digested by the action of the enzymes and healthy bacteria contained
therein. Rich in these enzymes themselves, fermented foods help digest the
other foods eaten. Perhaps their greatest benefit is the cleansing and building
effect they have on bacteria in the small and large intestines.
The blood should be mildly alkaline, whereas the bowel must be slightly acidic to resist germs and harmful intestinal bacteria. Yet most bacteria in people's colons, especially people who rely heavily on meat and animal protein, is potentially dangerous alkaline bacteria. The colon also contains carcinogens suspected of causing cancer of the bowel - the second leading cause of death to cancer in America. Fermented foods are helpful because the natural lactic acid contained in them tends to neutralize the alkaline bacteria, replacing it with a healthy acid condition in the bowel. What this means is cleaner, healthier blood and a greater resistance to germs and infection. Lightly fermented foods also help heal the body of the damage caused by immunizations.
The enzymes in fermented foods stimulate the growth of friendly bacteria like lactobacillus, which in turn produces lactic acid, a natural astringent and guardian of the bowel. The traditional use of fermented foods in the diets of tribal peoples is considered to be based on sound dietetic principles. They are especially helpful for those people with bowel disorders such as diarrhea, constipation, colitis, etc. (Lesson 7, chiDiet.com and Lightly Fermented Raw Foods)
Dehydrated Foods
Properly dehydrated foods are nutritionally superior to the dried foods in
stores. Although the vitamin, mineral, enzyme and fiber content are lower than
fresh produce, they remain high with proper drying. No preservatives or
chemicals are necessary. Flavor and color are maintained, and dried food keeps
well. (Lesson 13,
chiDiet.com)
A Simple Diet
Dr. Wigmore spent six months working in a hospital in India, where hundreds
overcame their health challenges with the Wigmore Lifestyle. Upon her return to
the States she visited Creative Health Institute in Michigan. Donald Haughey,
the co-founder of Creative Health, asked her why, after all of her successes in
India, she was sad.
"In India I found the problem was from lack," she said. Lack of the proper vitamins, minerals and nutrition. "In America, I learned, it is from abundance." Her time in India taught her that there was an underlying problem in America that she didn't know if she could overcome - Americans ate too much, and ate too rich. Even when they were on the Wigmore program, they often opted for rich foods, and overate.
Dr. Wigmore taught the benefits of a very low calorie diet. This was the hardest part of her teachings for most people to accept. Scientific studies now substantiate Dr. Wigmore's teachings on this subject: www.contracostatimes.com/mld/cctimes/news/nation/13651839.htm?source=rss&channel=cctimes_nation.
Mental Attitude
When I worked at Creative Health Institute in Michigan I saw that people that
use phrases such as "I am overcoming cancer" have a high success rate
in doing so; people that say "I have cancer" don't respond to the
program nearly as well. Dr. Wigmore would not allow the use of phrases such as
"I have," and taught people to say, "My challenge
is
," or "I am overcoming..."
Prayer and Spirituality
Dr. Wigmore taught that all healing is Physical, Mental, Emotional and
Spiritual. She encouraged all of her patients to pray and meditate daily, be
they Christian, Buddhist, Muslim or Krishna. The only rule she had was a large
sign that said, "No
Proselytizing."
Prayer and reliance upon Infinite Divinity is the foundation of all 12 Step
Programs, and integral to their success, as well-presented by Victoria Boutenko
in her book 12 Steps to Raw
Foods.
Food Preparation Classes
Since so much of the Wigmore Lifestyle is outside of the experience of most
people, Dr. Wigmore established a number of Institutes, places people could
learn about the steps to wellness. She knew that if food wasn't tasty and
satisfying people would not live the Lifestyle.
For over 30 years the teaching emphasis at the Wigmore Institutes has been to give students a hands-on experience. More recently the program has become available in a Home Study version, which uses a lot of video footage, but a two-week hands-on training program is still the best way to learn. Probably the best value of the Home Study Program is to reinforce and refresh the lessons learned at a hands-on program.

If this was a fancy, glossy magazine, this section would
have been printed in a light green box at the side of the above article:
Dr. Szekely's scientific investigations were based upon his studies of the Essenes, research done when he was a young man working in the Vatican Archives, and empirically tested when he found himself stuck in Mexico for the duration of World War II.
Dr. Wigmore's research was inspired what she learned from her grandmother, a local healer in Lithuania, observations of the ways of animals, and upon kinesiology (also known as muscle testing), a science discovered by Dr. John Diamond and taught for years to chiropractors, lately brought to public attention after 30 years of clinical testing and research by Dr. David R. Hawkins. (Demonstrated by Dr. Wigmore in About Processed Foods.)
Despite the difference in the origins of their research, by 1978 there was 99% agreement in Wigmore's and Szekely's teachings.

Diabetes and Living Foods Research
My name is Aimee Perrin. I am a type 1 diabetic who has been on a raw/living food diet for 3 years in the hopes of discontinuing my need for insulin injections. I am currently researching the benefits of a raw food diet for type 1 as well as type 2 diabetic individuals. I, myself, have decreased my injected insulin from 22 total units per day on a low carb, high protein diet to 8 total units per day on a raw food diet, gradually achieved over 33 months raw.
I have been commissioned to write an article for the magazine Diabetes Health, a wonderfully balanced publication with an open-minded editor who is very interested in learning more about the benefits of the raw food lifestyle for diabetes.
I would like to hear from type 1 and type 2 diabetics who have good results on raw food concerning:
1. Weight loss;
2. Insulin reduction or completely getting off of injected insulin or other diabetic medications;
3. Improvement of any diabetic complications - vision problems, neuropathy, high cholesterol, blood pressure, skeletal problems.
I would love to communicate with you! (other diabetics or former diabetics on a raw food diet)

In The News
For years, killing rodents was sodium fluoride's most popular use, until dentists latched onto the idea that feeding little bits of fluoride to children might prevent cavities. We assume that the FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) or some other governing body tests, studies and assures the safety of all drugs, including the doctor-prescribed fluoride tablets caring parents feed their children. After all, they wouldn't sell it if it wasn't safe, would they? But neither the FDA nor any other regulatory body ever tested the safety or effectiveness of fluoride tablets: www.useless-knowledge.com/1234/aug/article259.html. [Thanks to Steven Gibb of RawFamily.com for sharing this with us.] [Previous articles we've run about fluoridation: chidiet.com/news/LivingFoodsNews20051231.htm and chidiet.com/news/LivingFoodsNews20060107.htm.]
(Reuters Health) - A high intake of vitamin E, beta-carotene, and vitamin C does not prevent prostate cancer, results of a large study suggest. However, smokers may have a lower risk of advanced prostate cancer if their intake of vitamin E is high, and men with low dietary beta-carotene intake seem to benefit from supplemental beta-carotene: news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20060214/hl_nm/antioxidants_prostate_cancer_dc.
(Reuters Health) - The time elapsed between a diagnosis of localized prostate cancer and surgery does not appear to have a large effect on the risk of cancer recurrence, according to a study. However, doctors say it's best to avoid undue delays: news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20060214/hl_nm/prostate_cancer_dc. [Therefore, there's time for a visit to Creative Health before surgery.]

Back To
Nature
by Jerry
Staff Member chiDiet.com
In many parts of the country the magical season of Spring is upon us. Here on the farm in Georgia the landscape becomes greener every day. Being a student of nature and a raw foodist I feel a special affinity with the color green.
Our many bird feeders are becoming increasingly popular as an abundance of birds have joined us here to herald the arrival of Spring. At one time I thought it would be fun to be able to identify all the different species of birds we are blessed with here. Yet I have found that the true enjoyment in observing the birds is to experience the unique beauty of each one, rather than give them a name.
I read once that the songs of the birds, through the nature of their tonal qualities and sound frequencies, create vibrations that trigger physiological changes in plants and trees, a catalyst for the opening of buds into flowers and leaves.
Whether it is true or not, I have chosen to believe it, and this has added a new dimension to my enjoyment of the musical song of the birds in Spring.
So as our feathered friends usher in this season of new life, take time to listen to their song, and feel the magic of the music of nature.
