I’m in Hawaii – and Debating Organic Food Costs!

I find myself in a position on Maui where being organic is quite expensive, and it’s sometimes a tough call to make.
An organic, locally-grown papaya is $6.89 here in Kihei; non-organic is $1.29.
Granted, the organic one tastes ten times better than the non-organic, but still, $7 for a papaya?
At the local farmer’s market I’m getting the kama’aina (local’s) discount, and I can get locally-grown papaya for $1.50, but it’s not organic.
What to do, what to do? An entire meal at the greasy burger place is only $3.
At times like these I ask myself, what is my health worth?
Then, despite the cost, I buy the deluxe, ripe, locally-grown organic papaya, take it home and have a feast.
I’m worth it.
If I have to compromise I’ll ride my bike instead of drive, but I’m not compromising on my diet.

Yes, as a Maui resident myself. Sometimes it is hard to choose between the organic and the conventional due to price. That is where you learn to forage and / or make lots of money. We must treat our bodies like the temples they are!

My health is worth it too…but when you live on a fixed income such as myself you have to make every dollar available stretch to all the different expenses in life. I have yet to figure out how to combat this real life situation, I have a set amount I can spend on groceries etc. as well as am not in an area where much organic produce is even available. What then?

Well for some people they can’t afford to pay that kind of money out. But what I would do if I can’t afford to pay out the seven dollars; I would go for the cheaper one. That way you will get something good out of it. Plus you will be staying raw. I no it is not the best, but you will get some value out of it.
