When it comes to green smoothies, there are some that just trump them all. Here’s a great smoothie to help get your day started just right!

Green and Gone Smoothie

  • 1 quarter to 1 half fresh pineapple
  • 3 leaves of Kale – I use deep green “dino” kale, deveined
  • 1 ripe banana (can use frozen)
  • 4 fresh mint leaves, optional-to taste
  • 1 quarter to 1 half inch of fresh ginger root (can use dry), to taste
  • 2 to 4 cups water

    I truly do not understand some recipes for the
    Living Raw Foods. I thought Ann Wigmore taught that
    you could not mix fruit and vegetables together such as
    your recipe above. I really need to know the answer.

    Right you are, Linda. I should have made it plain. There are raw diets, and then there’s Dr. Ann’ integrated lifestyle plan, which happens to include raw foods.

    Dr. Ann taught that food combining was an important part of the raw lifestyle, and fruits should be eaten separate from greens.

    At the same time, she also accepted that a bit of fruit – apples, pears or bananas, could be added to energy soup (green smoothies) to make it more palatable.

    But, yes, this is not pure Dr. Ann teachings, and I’ll be more careful to specify such in the future. That’s why I also have a blog at http://chidiet.net/. On that website I share the raw lifestyle, outside of Dr. Ann’s teachings.

    I think you can mix fruit with leafy greens only as they are in a separate category of vegetables, or at least that is what Victoria B says in her green for life book..

    greens are considered a blossom and not a vegetable botanically and can be digested with fruits. starchy vegetables don’t digest well with fruits but greens are fine.

    I like this recipe with one change: a LOT more kale! I also wouldn’t bother deveining it, either, since a Vitamix or other heavy HP unit will pulverize it in seconds.

    Personally, over the years I began using a lot more leafy greens and less fruit. Pineapple is one of my favorites. Mint is a wonderful treat in any smoothie, too!

    Dear Jim,

    I feel your reply to Linda’s remarks is little diplomatic and seems you are defending old theory of Dr.Ann’s of not mixing fruits with vegetables.Though I feel an intelligent and experiened doctor like you are fully convinced from inside that vitoria’s Green Smoothies are absolutely accepatable with positive results on the basis of thorogh blending of green leaves with fruits wherein rapturing cells occurs while blending the material.No doubt Dr. Ann’s work is appriciable but for humans there is always possibility of improvement,and we should accept the modification on its merit basis.

    Actually, with the exception of “always eat melons alone,” Dr. Ann said that food combining didn’t matter when you were blending foods. I’m a big fan of Victoria Boutenko, she studied at the Institute I was Director of (Creative Health), and produced 3 videos for Victoria. ALSO, you’re completely right about change; Dr. Ann’s program was constantly changing as she learned more. Her long-time assistant, Dr. Flora van Orden III, is a good friend of mine and has shared much with me on what Dr. Ann believed near the end, before she perished in the fire. If my remarks sounded diplomatic… I dunno..

    Good information – thanks! I have recently been doing a “mostly raw” diet…green smoothie every morning and salad at lunch – sometimes fruit smoothie in the evening. I am losing weight and my skin is better – life is a path…we just keep learning and what works for one doesn’t necessarily work for another…keep up the good work!

    I love green smoothies. Another consideration might be the potacium sodium balance and phosphorus and calcium balance proposed by Sapotey Brook a long time raw foodist. Eating fruits and greens were great for the initial detox. Long term I felt muscle weakness and cold and passive as I was overdosing from too much posstassium (fruit) and not balance with enough sodium or celery. Also canker sores became a problem. Not enough fruit and you start to look for calories through nuts. ¨Yin¨ foods would inevitablely leave me binging on cooked foods as I would instinctively search out foods with phosphorous ¨yang¨. When I added sprouted wheat berries my energy levels surged and I immediately felt better. Then to balance that with calcium. Hope this gives some insight to raw foodists who are strugging to stay raw. Any thoughts?

    thanks for the recipe. But am confused which is which.

    On proper Food combining, we are advised not to combine sweet-sour fruits. It should be sweet -sweet or sour-sour. Isn’t banana classified as sweet and pineapple sour? pls clarify . thanks.

    I have more of a question than a reply. I have had 3 knee surgeries and getting ready for another this month, in the past year-the first being Oct ’09. I live with a die hard cooked meat eater that am dependant on for meals. I don’t do well with cooked foods especially non-vegan meals. I’m feeling chemically challenged at this point and would like help with how to handle easy meals post surgery. I can talk him into making smoothies if they are easy to make. I really need to get de-chemicalized after surgery-I think it’s why I had such bad luck this with the last 3. What I’m asking for is what is good for as well as easy to make, on the sweet side…I’m not yet good with the really green drinks as of yet. I’ve been dependant for just about a year now, feel totally sick, my lab data is wacked, my blood pressure and my weight has risen drastlically. Please help!
