Inside The Video Vault… One of the biggest myths and misconceptions people have about the raw diet is “how do you get protein?” Here’s a very rare video of Dr. Ann Wigmore herself talking about how raw foodists can get protein in their diets.

Two concluding comments:

  1. First, I’d love to know what you thought of the video and your plans on getting protein in your diet – please share your thoughts on the blog.
  2. Second, I’m giving some thought to doing this on a biweekly or weekly basis. So if you’d like to see more interviews, videos, ebooks with different speakers or authors who “get it,” just let me know…

Transcript of the video, by Wendy Stams:

We are back again to, a make what we call, a, the replacement of protein.

And again, let me repeat that this living food is not a diet, and it is very complete.  Everything that we do (with) this living food has replacements.

Ordinarily you will have to have, of course, plenty protein; which has always been pointed out – people who are vegetarians are not getting enough protein.

So we put big emphasis on important role that we include plenty of protein.

So, we will make a protein (seed loaf?).  Of course there’s other things than sunflower… over hear we have nuts; and we have, a, we have also, um, some, a … well, any kind of nuts – like sprouts have a tremendous amount of protein.

So, it’s not because living food, everything that we have served, doesn’t have protein.

But that’s back to nature.  Strictly back to nature means nothing, just more things in nature.  So…

This particular, a, sunflower, which is soaked again for four or five hours, and then what we do (generally, gently)… we put it in the blender.

This (referring to the jar of seeds) soaked five hours, sprouted about one day, into the blender, (unable to make out a few words) … let it be blended with Rejuvelac.

Rejuvelac, again, it prevents oxidation, saves time, it helps (slightly, lightly) ferment.  See, living food consists of easy to digest nourishment through fermenting use of sprouts.

And, many, a, say like, greens, which is home grown in the kitchen and then, a, we put big emphasis on this, we call, a “protein slightly fermented”.

This what we’ll be doing here.  We will just blend this and pour into a sprout bag that is the, a, sprout bag with, with the, a, very important, a, thing, because you can hang it up to drain over night.

So let’s start with the blending.

Then we have to (half-mix), the, a, when it get’s thick at the bottom.  The, a, sunflower, especially.  Because it get’s thick and you have to start all over again.

…A little more Rejuvelac.  See, we do not measure anything.  A, because this is the create, to be creative, from your kitchen.  It is actually, a, important to, a, to know, a, to know approximately what to do.

Ok, now, open it, pour in the sprout bag, and then, you can (hang it up, set it up), which I did last night.  This happens to be ready and this is just going to be there all night.

So, a, the, a ready – kin… the ready kind, is for you to see how it looks; and I’m sure the (can’t make it out) …your protein.  There’s no…

I just want to get a plate where I let the, a, sprouts bag produce this (what we call) seed cheese.

I made quite a bit of it because cheese loaves that you make goes very fast.  Some people want to make protein nuggets and actually, we can, a, do it a lot of different ways.

And when I say protein nuggets, I just take some of that and I roll it.  And, (you could, we should)  be doing this later.

(unable to make out a few words) … And, that’s the reason I make so much of it.

And, a, I made a (seed loaf?).  And I’ll show you, too, in a little while, what seed loaf looks like – until I explain about other kinds of protein – such as the almonds.

Almonds actually need to soak even longer than 10 to 15 hours.  They need to be soaked about, oh, sometimes two days because they are very dry.

And then what I do, I put them in, a, hot water, and then, for one to two minutes, they peel very, very evenly; there is no problem in peeling.

See, it’s important to have the skins off because they look better, taste better … there they are.

And, I made some almond crème.  The almond cream is generally used also for different things.

We’ll be using some for the (can’t make out word) to make almond nuggets and also I could take about two tablespoons in a glass of Rejuvelac and I will have this wonderful Rejuvelac Almond Milk.

It takes practice.  Some people say “well, oh, I feel so hungry”.  Now, we don’t … no one needs to go hungry – because that is the best, the really best way to have a lift or a energy that is very, very (healthful, helpful) for busy people.

For anybody here in the audience that’s hungry, come and get it because it is very nice to have a good, substantial drink and very, very quickly.

And, actually, I like to have it available.  So all I did, I took these almonds, I put it in the blender, and I do not strain anything because if I’m going to eat other kinds of seeds, like sesame, I would have to strain them.  And then, a, if I use just ordinary seeds, like … [end]

  1. Tania Says:

I wondered if it would be possible to make a transcript of this video for those of us who find it difficult to follow because of hearing problems etc
    All the best
    Tania

  2. Pat Says:

    Hi Dr.JIm,
I did try with this video but I could hardly see Dr. Ann and the audio quality was not good. In other words, I think I prefer the written word. Thank you so much anyway,
    Pat Fitzmaurice

  3. Glenda, Australia Says:

Enjoyed the video, even with the pauses. How great it must have been to be able to go to one of Ann’s workshops.

  4. Julie Says:

Very interesting if a little disjointed.

  5. janet Says:

that was a good video, i always wanted to see what Dr.Ann was like ;-) good recipe info… Thanks!

  6. pat Says:

Jim, I know that Ann’s message is quite valuable, but the video quality is not very good. I strain to hear and understand and I don’t hear everything that she says. It might help if a printed recap could accompany her comments and receipes. I really appreciate your efforts to bring her message to us. Keep up the great work.

  7. Denise Scott Says:

wow! This is such an honor for me to see Dr. Wigmore prepare nut cheese with rejuvelac and almond cream while explaining the benefits of the protein base herself ~ I would love to watch more.

I have studied the digestive system for years and terminal illness. I have gone back to sprouting and using seed “dairy” and ready to launch a webpage dedicated to Dr. Wigmore. Thank you for this is timely and I wonder if I may link to this, Jim? I am on the edge of my seat about the melon seeds~she had my full attention c:

I just finished morning rejuvelac with fresh juiced grapefruits; as a paperhanger once I even hung paper very similar to that mural behind her!

    What a treasure, Denise

  8. Dorian Austin Says:

Was Ann using almonds peeled in hot water and rejuvelac to get protein in the diet? I want to be sure on this; because the video seemed a little blur. Maybe its my computor! I am currently a living and raw food eater and am doing great with my healthy eating habits; Is this recipe good for breast cancer? Could eating avacado and olive oil a bad thing with this type person?

Thank you for all the living food tips!

    Best Regards,

    Dorian

  9. Mary Says:

I very much appreciate this video although I experience difficulty understanding what she says due to my hearing challenges.

Yes, I would very much appreciate more interviews, videos & speakers on a weekly basis.

    Thank you so very much.

  10. Dawn Says:

    Couldn’t get link to work.

  11. Ray Says:

I listened to part of your video on Ann Wigmore and the protein diet this morning. I was only able to get part of it because I am hard of hearing, but I would think that other people would love to see and hear Ann Wigmore demonstrate or discuss raw foods. I hope you’re getting a lot of good reviews on her videos. Because of my handicap I have to depend on these discussions in writing. I’m not able to get any benefits from videos, but I do have a couple of Ann Wigmore’s books and there are at least one or more others I am going to get.

I haven’t taken advantage of your blogs but I will have a look at them soon.

Keep up the good work, Jim.

  12. Teddy Says:

What is she blending it with? something lax? I don’t quite understand what she is saying.

  13. Jim Says:

    Thanks for all the input.

If the video is jerky it’s because your internet connection speed is slow. Press Pause, then wait for it to download, the press Play and it’ll play fine.

Yes, it’s grainy because I compiled it for slow internet speeds. If you right-click on the “Download Video Here” links you can save the high-quality .mp4 file to your computer and play it that way. The direct link to this video is
    http://chidiet.org/content/videos/54-3DrAnnProtein.mp4
    - note that the file is 47 MB.

Downloading the mp4 file will not only solve the small and grainy problem, but also the sound issues.

Dr. Ann was using Rejuvelac and soaked, shelled Almonds. Rejuvelac is lightly fermented wheatberries, and is a staple of the Ann Wigmore program.

re: printed recaps. I agree, and I get a lot of requests like yours. I’d like to subtitle all of her films, but need a transcriptionist to help out. I’m always looking for volunteers to help out. Anybody interested?

Thanks for the kind words. I have lots more to post in the coming days.

    Jim Carey

  14. Creating Wellness Says:

Loved the video….please make more available…weekly would be wonderful. Very helpful to hear and see her working the foods.

  15. Arlyne Says:

    Jim,

Thanks for sharing the video. There was a lot of good iformation. I have high speed but I still always have to use the direct link to the video to see it. Can’t see it on the blog page at all.

    Thanks again!
    Arlyne

  16. Linda Says:

I’m just starting this juicing thing, thanks for your website. I lost a kidney this past August (can’t find it anywhere :( ) due to renal cancer but how fortunate our Creator gave us two, I also somewhere along this journey developed lymphoma. The Mayo Clinc has advised me to just wait and when it goes from the present stage to stage 2, then we can begin chemo! Now that was exciting to me……duh…..so I have decided to stop messing with them and begin to be proactive in fighting this thing. A friend of mine gave me your website and I have begun juicing. After a week, I have more energy…which is a great thing. I’ve learned that there’s definately some fresh greens that shouldn’t be mixed with others..like watercress should stand alone! I enjoyed the Ann video and the book. All information is helpful….thx!

  17. lucyane Says:

Thank you so much for the video. Adorable!! She was and for me still is such a powerful lady!

  18. Jim Says:

Yes, Dr. Ann is my inspiration, too. I do all of this in memory, and thanks, to her.

    Jim

  19. Martha Says:

I do enjoy your videos, please keep them coming. This one was a little hard to understand but being so rare is certaintly understandable. I look forward to other interviews as you learn from everyone. Thank you for all your wonderful work. Martha

  20. Phyllis Ikeda Says:

Enjoyed video. Good tips. Would enjoy more. Thank you.

  21. Nancy Says:

    Jim,
I love seeing Dr. Ann she is such an inspiration to me
and I love seeing her videos. Also if you want please e-mail me about subtitles for her videos I can understand
her well she does have quite a accent.
Please put up anything you can.

  22. Jennifer Says:

I have purchased many of Ann’s Books. This videois a help because the book recipes ae very cumbersome to follow and mess up the whole kitchen.

This video suggests some changes in technique that make it easier to do the recipes.

    Thank You

    Dr Jennifer Daniels

  23. Beverly Says:

I genuintely appreciated viewing the video of Ann sharing how to make the protein drinks. I would love to see more of her videos. I am eager to listen to it again and I wish I could have been the person who was able to go up to her table and sample what she had just made! I am not familiar with rejuvelac but will check the health food store to find out how to purchase it. Right now, I am getting most of my protein from making green smoothies and I also try to eat some nuts each day. I need to work on soaking them first though.

  24. Jim Says:

Rejuvelac is simply lightly fermented wheatberries. Start with Hard Red Winter wheat.

Soak overnight, then pour off the water.

Fill the container with (filtered) water, then let sit for 2-4 days, stirring a bit twice a day. Keep lightly covered.

Depending on room temperature, after a few days the liquid will have a slightly pungent smell. It’s ready. Pour off, refrigerate, and substitute for water in recipes, and for drinking.

    Jim

  25. Jim Says:

I’ve never seen Rejuvelac for sale. After “harvesting” it keeps for up to two weeks in the refrigerator, but it’s the kind of thing I constantly have going in the kitchen.

    Jim

  26. Flavia Says:

I’ve been reading a lot about Dr. Ann lately, but this was actually the first time I got to see her. Thank you so much, I really appreciate it!
Also, thank you for the detailed explanation on how to make rejuvelac, very, very helpful!

    Flavia

  27. Janet Says:

The video was excellent. Regarding the cloth bag used to hold the blended ingredients of rejuvalac & nuts; how does one go about cleaning it for the next use? Detergent can leave behind harmful residue, so what safe cleaning product does one use? I have the same problem with my Norwalk juicer bags. HELP!!

  28. Karen Says:

    Re: Home Study Package

Just a quick note, Jim. I thought you should know that I am soooo enjoying my adventure into my notebook!! I’m only into Lesson 1 but I am finding it well organized and well put together. Did you do that?? I took a peek into a few other chapters and there are lots of options to the ‘original’ energy soup. Delighted. Thank you for the extra DVD’s: that was thoughtful of you.

Stayed in bed last Saturday all day to relax and read and watched 4 DVD’s w/ Ann Wigmore. It was a real pleasure to get to hear her speak [although posthumously]. Oh! I also enjoyed the book of her history as a child and young adult. That was amazing. I hadn’t heard of her past before.

Your work is fabulous. You’ve helped me personally tons! And, those that I come in contact with will learn too as a direct result of your work. They know your name and website. Anyone that makes my life and work easier is my cup of tea! I appreciate you.

    Joy,

  29. Flo Gross Says:

Hi, I can?t understand how to add your site in my rss reader. Can you Help me, please :)

  30. Jim Says:

The easiest way to add my site to your RSS feed is to use this link:

    http://feeds2.feedburner.com/ChidietRawFoodsBlog

    Thanks!

  31. Jill Says:

I just discovered this site and have been reading books about living foods and how the body can heal itself with proper nourishment, so I’m excited to learn as much as possible, as quickly as possible! I was thrilled to see so many videos available here! My problem is that I can barely understand what Dr. Whitmore is saying throughout these videos because the accoustics are so poor in the room where she’s working and speaking. It sounds like she’s talking inside a can! Also, I would like to see more close-ups of what she is doing. I’m sorry to be critical…I really do appreciate that these are available, and all the work that must go into making them. I just know that I would be able to get alot more out of them if I could understand more of what is being said and going on than I have been to this point. I hope my comments don’t offend anyone. Thank you so much for this site and all your hard work to help others who are interested in this path to wellness.

  35. Patricia Says:

Thanks for shaing this very informative video. I would like to see more of these weekly.

  36. Diana Says:

The video was not clear, and you could hardly hear her. It seem like it was to far away to even see what she is doing. I noticed it with some of the othere videos as well.

  37. Jim Carey Says:

I know. The videotapes I got this from were old, and poorly stored. We did what we could to save this unique, historical information.

  38. Jim Carey Says:

Sure. If you know of someone who does transcriptions, I’ll be glad to post it with the videos.

    Thanks!
    Jim

  39. Robina Says:

Thanks for the video of Ann. I got the link from a firend on http://www.thebestdayever.com and enjoyed hearing Ann’s voice again. I worked with her a very, very long time ago and followed her food theories (rejuvelac (ughh) and all) for many years. She was a very lovely lady. thanks again.

  40. Jacqui Says:

Is the almond cream Almonds & rejuvelac or are there other ingredients?

Thank you for the video. It was really informational.

  41. WENDY Says:

Jim, I will be happy to transcript if I am able to make out the mp4 version. I will happily do this. By the way, I sent you an email regarding your grass roots series… and am waiting for a response before I complete my order. Please contact me to arrange details of providing you with a transcript.

    Wendy

  42. Wilhelmina Says:

Jim, Thank you so much Dr. Ann and you are a great inspiration. Weekly vidio’s or recipes are great to keep every body motivated, we all get stuck in the same routine and a vidio would be great inspiration to change it up a bit.It would help if a printed recap could accompany her comments and receipes. I really appreciate your efforts to bring her message to us. Keep up the great work I love that you put so much effort into it all. Thanks to you and this tape I feel that I got to meet her. I have all her books but had not seen her. Thanks thanks and many more thanks

  43. Joan Says:

I agree with those above – would like transcripts, recipes, etc. I have a hard time hearing and understanding what Dr. Ann is saying…but this appears to be very valuable information. Thank you!

  44. chris Says:

I´ve been doing the living sprouts and rejuvelac, eating fruits in the morning and energy soup or two salads in the afternoon. More energy great. One of my ears clogged up my first two months into live foods. and i couldn´t hear. I went to an acupuntuist and he told me something was going on with my liver gall bladder. I´ve cut back on the nuts and putting olive oil on my salads and the problems seems to have remedied itself hearing much better. Folks be careful out there, in your search for protein be careful you don´t pick up too many fats via avocados and nuts otherwise you could have some problems. I´ve been eat nuts every other day and only one avocado every two days. Any this seems to clear the problem up. Trying to get my protein through greens like the gorillas and also i few sprouts and most of my carbs through fruits in the morning. This has been my experience. I dig the video and have found the my energy and happiness is at a new level on this diet. I hope to continue. Good luck to all out there!

  45. Jim Carey Says:

I agree, too, re: transcripts. It’s always great when volunteers come forward to help with that work. There is SO much to transcribe, and we’ve only done a couple of her videos so far.

  46. Dr. Flora Says:

To Chris: the reasons your ears clogged up is that when you begin the cleansing program, all of the fat in your body rushes upward, like the fat in a salad dressing bottle and eyes grow dim, ears clog, sinuses begin to drain. The alkalinity of the liveit (not diet!)gets down to cellular level cleansing. PS. You are supposed to use soft white pastry wheat berries for the Rejuvelac and soak them overnight, drain them for 2 days, rinsing them twice a day, fill the jar with twice as much water (after the last rinse) as there are berries sprouted, and leave them for 2 days to ferment. Pour off to use and immediately refill. Leave for 1 day to ferment and pour off to use and immediately refill. Leave for 1 more day and pour off to use and discard the berries.

It’s important for everyone to know about the 5 stages of vinegar on one of our videos, which goes well with Dr. Ann’s on seed and nut cheeses. I had some almond cream with my Energy Soup yesterday, and included some Veggikraut made with cabbage and baby bok choy! Delicious and full of the anti-stress b-complex vitamins which everyone needs who works in a heated or air conditioned office or who eats things that have been given broad spectrum antibiotics (anything that is or is from an animal). More and more I’m convinced that the casein (casomorphine) dairy protein is at the bottom of most of our health problems. No one should be using any kind of oils (see Drs. Caldwell Esselstyn, Dean Ornish and T. Colin Campbell’s UTube talks about reversing disease using a 10% fat, 10% protein plant-based diet with no dairy protein and no oils).

  47. Sharon Says:

Download for original video does not work

  48. Jim Carey Says:

Thanks for letting me know, Sharon. I re-uploaded it, and it tests OK now.

  49. Frank Says:

Great video and information this helps a lot. I’m trying to learn so I can follow this lifestyle.
    Thanks
